Coketon was the central mining facility of the Davis Coal and Coke Company along the North Fork of the Blackwater River.
Coketon contained 600 ovens, employes 150 men with an operation that ran 250 days per year. Coal production began in 1887 and continued until 1956. A few surface mines continued until 1965. All the remains now are the few scattered remains of the beehive coke ovens.
Directions: From Elkins follow US-33 towards Blackwater Falls State Park. At Harmon turn right onto US-32 continue to follow the signs for Blackwater Falls. Continue through the small town of Davis and into Thomas. Look for Douglas Rd on the left hand side after around 1.2 miles. Follow Douglas Rd till the fork then turn left onto Blackwater Canyon Trail.
